The Significance of Laws in Ending Violence Against Women
Violence Against Women (VAW) remains a significant issue in the Philippines, with nearly 1 in 5 women affected, according to the 2022 National Demographic and Health Survey. The Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children (VAWC) Act of 2004, or R.A. 9262, plays a vital role in protecting women from various forms of abuse, including physical, emotional, and sexual violence. This law, along with the annual 18-day Campaign to End VAW, raises awareness and promotes accountability in addressing VAW.
Other laws, like R.A. 8353 (the Anti-Rape Law of 1997) and R.A. 11313 (the Safe Spaces Act of 2019), strengthen the fight against gender-based violence. R.A. 8353 redefines rape and includes marital rape, while the Safe Spaces Act tackles
harassment in public spaces and online, creating safer environments for women.

These laws, combined with ongoing awareness campaigns, empower women to seek justice, hold perpetrators accountable, and promote a culture of respect. The 18-day campaign is an important reminder of the need for continued efforts to end violence against women and create a society where women are safe and respected.
